Descouvre Campobasso

Campobasso is about 700 meters above sea level on the slopes of a hill in the southern Apennines: its position, you can admire the suggestive landscapes encompassing almost all the centers of the region.



Among the many monuments in the city include the Manforte Castle, built around 1450 on the ruins of a Norman building, on a hill overlooking the city; Cathedral, built in 1504 and rebuilt in neo-classical style in 1805 after an earthquake; St. Bartholomew Church, Roman-style; the Church of S. Antonio Abate, built in 1572 with a facade in Renaissance style end and Baroque interior and decorated with paintings and frescoes of the seventeenth century; the Church of San Leonardo, the thirteenth century; The Church of San Giorgio, the twelfth in the Gothic style. The city also hosts the curious Museum of Nativity, with its collection of old cribs, some of the eighteenth century.

The archaeological heritage of this area is rich and varied. We mention Village Campomarino, prehistoric, and many cemeteries as the necropolis of Termoli, with the ruins of 141 tombs, the Tomb of Guglionesi, the graves of Gildonea Samnites and Lombard necropolis of Campochiaro, the early Middle -age.

We should also mention the necropolis and Hellenistic tombs Larino a delicious village which was founded in the fifth century BC. JC, is rich in monuments from different eras. Among these monuments, the Domus Hellenistic, Roman amphitheater and baths, the Gothic Cathedral of the fourteenth century, the Tower adjacent to the Cathedral, the Palace of the City Council and the Church of Saint Francis.

In the valley of the Tammaro river, there are many fortified centers such as Samnite village of Monte Vairano, that of Cercemaggiore and fortifications Gildone, Vinchiaturo-Mirabello Duronia and Terravecchia di Sepino. In the province of Campobasso there is also plenty of churches, especially from the Middle Ages, between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries the Cathedral di Triveneto with extraordinary crypt, the Church of Santa Maria della Strada Matrix, the Church of San Giorgio in Tifernina Petrella, the Abbey of Santa Maria di Morrone del Sannio Casalpiano to the Church of S. Maria di Mare in Campomarino, Cathedral of Termoli, the Church di S.Alfonso dei Liguori to Collotorto, the chapel of the Madonna delle Grazie in Riccia, Church St. Nicola di Bari and the church of S. Maria Maggiore in Guglionesi, di S. Maria Convent della Libera to Cercemaggiore and the Church of the Madonna del Canneto in Roccavivara.

Finally, it is worth noting its many castles: Castle Gambatesa, Castle Evoli Castropignano, Tufara Castle, Castle Torella del Sannio, Castle Civitacampomarano, Anjou Colletorto Tower, Castle and Riccia that of Termoli.
